What is Health Informatics?

Health informatics is the science of engineering, managing and utilising health related information for the purposes of improving healthcare provision. Some scientists discuss that health informatics is a sub-section of the healthcare management industry. Other scientists acknowledge this science as a large term that encompass a lot of sub-domains, such as medical informatics, nursing informatics, and clinical informatics. More specifically, this science lies at the intersection of two main domains; the health sciences and the computer sciences. Some researchers add other domains, such as the knowledge sciences, decision making, information and communication technology and other related fields. Accordingly, this domain could be defined in several ways, based on the perspectives of the users and on their priorities.

Health informatics focuses mainly on the computer applications in healthcare and biomedicine, trying to get the best value of using information technology to provide the best healthcare possible. As a knowledge and practice, health informatics serves many areas of improving effectiveness of healthcare services, efficiency, timeliness, and patient safety. It is a robust tool in the hands of clinicians, healthcare professionals, and other health leaders and administrators.
